AUSTIN, TEXAS – The American Energy Institute (AEI) applauds the Texas Senate State Affairs Committee for initiating an investigation into The Hartford’s discriminatory decision to terminate AEI’s insurance coverage based on the organization’s advocacy for energy production.
On February 20, 2025, AEI received a formal notice from The Hartford informing the organization that its insurance policy would not be renewed upon expiration. The Hartford cited AEI’s promotion of social and political causes related to energy production as the reason for nonrenewal, explicitly stating that such activities fall outside of the company’s business guidelines for coverage.
In response, Senator Bryan Hughes, Chairman of the Texas Senate State Affairs Committee, issued a letter to The Hartford, raising serious concerns over the insurer’s decision and its implications for businesses and organizations engaged in lawful advocacy and commerce. The Committee is now formally investigating the matter to determine whether The Hartford’s actions violate Texas laws prohibiting corporate discrimination based on political and ideological beliefs.
“Texas will not tolerate financial discrimination against organizations simply because they support American energy,” said American Energy Institute CEO, Jason Isaac. “This decision by The Hartford is a blatant attempt to punish advocacy for affordable, reliable energy, and we are grateful to Senator Hughes and the Texas Senate State Affairs Committee for taking swift action to address this egregious overreach.”
The Hartford’s refusal to renew AEI’s policy underscores the growing trend of financial institutions and service providers engaging in ideological discrimination against the energy industry. AEI remains committed to ensuring that businesses and advocacy groups are not unjustly targeted for supporting the production and development of America’s vast energy resources.
AEI will continue to cooperate fully with the Texas Senate State Affairs Committee as the investigation moves forward. The organization urges all businesses and policymakers to stand against this type of corporate bias and to support fair and equal access to financial services for all industries.
